I am confused about the process of applying for common law sponsorship in Canada because if your valid status only lasts 6 months but for common law you must live together for at least 1 year. So what is the right way to go about applying for that? My guess would be you would have to apply for an extension before the 6 month timeframe? If so, is that an acceptable reason? Thanks.

Yes, that is what most people do to manage to live together for 12 months.

It's difficult but not impossible.

I was lucky and got a two year work visa, this enabled me to live with my common law for the required one year.

A few posts on this forum have proclaimed that their visa was denied because of the 'one year' living together policy.

Try and research as much as possible before you send in your extension and make sure you have every single question covered.

Good Luck.
