Has anyone applied for a co-op work permit recently? By this, I mean a co-op work permit that you applied for separately after you had already received your study permit and started your studies.

I've been studying in a Canadian university since January 2014, and recently applied and got accepted to my school's co-op program that starts in January. I applied for both the co-op program and then the co-op work permit at the earliest possible time, but if the processing times on this website are accurate, I will not get my co-op work permit on time! It currently lists 120 days as the processing time for a Work Permit Extension, and I was told by a CIC employee that this is the category co-op work permits fall into.

Has anyone been in a situation where they would be ready to start their work term, but are still waiting for their co-op work permit? For anyone who has applied for a co-op work permit recently, how long did they take to process your application? I am getting worried about the processing times, as I don't know what I'm supposed to do in January if I still haven't received my work permit.

Do you have valid TRV and study permit? In which province do you live?

When did you apply for co-op work permit?

I'm visa exempt and don't require a TRV, but I've had a valid study permit since January 2014. I'm in Newfoundland. I applied for the co-op work permit just this week, and there's still over 3 months before I'll start my work term, but I'm concerned about the processing times since CIC's website says the processing time is now 120 days.

Just go to the nearest border and get a work permit right away. See attached link below.

Good luck

You just need to take following documents with you:

1. co-op letter from college/uni.
2. Passport
2. Study Permit

Cross Canadian border and go to the US side and tell them that you want to apply for Canadian work permit. They will issue you a paper (deny letter to enter US) then come back to Canadian side and tell them you want to apply for co-op work permit and you will be directed to the right officer.

Unfortunately I'm on an island and getting to the nearest border would require an expensive flight. I've already submitted my co-op work permit application, but might end up doing that as a last resort if I don't get the work permit on time.

Don't worry. Hopefully you will get your WP on time. You can also contact your local MP and explain them your situation.
They might be able expedite your application process.

We're in the same boat. Applied september 4. Keep getting those pesky "your application is updated" emails every now and then, mostly on weekends, and there is no update when I check.

I know students who applied in mid may and got theirs in mid august. The processing time means that 80% of applications should be done by whatever many days it tallies up. That doesn't mean that all 80% are done on that date. Some get theirs sooner. The remaining 20% will get theirs later.

I actually don't know if MP's represent international students as well, but I was thinking of asking either my boyfriend or my university's co-op coordinator to contact their local MP if I don't receive my work permit before mid-December. I applied on September 22, as soon as my university gave out the co-op letters.

They finally updated the processing times again today after almost 2 weeks, still showing 116 days for the Work Permit Extension category :(

1. MPs can't influence processing times.

Yes, you can. They will definitely help you. One of friend visited his local MP and they did contact CIC on his behalf but unfortunately he was within the processing time limit.

But, he got his co-op work permit in the end of September (applied on May 17th) and contacted MP on Sept 23rd.

Hope this helps.

I know, but they can enquire about the status of an application.

Got my approval today. Sigh of relief. Elokuu, shouldn't be long for you now. You applied shortly after me.
Congratulations, and thanks for letting me know!
