Hi everyone,

My common-law partner got his PR two years ago and I got mine recently (February 2024). He will be able to apply for citizenship in August this year (2024). I want to know if I can be a co-applicant on his application. I have already been in Canada way over three years and have files taxes for 5 years. Can I be his co-applicant or I should wait until he gets his cotizenship and then sponsor me?

Thanks

There's no such thing as co-application (in the sense you mean it) or sponsorship for citizenship. You both have to qualify for it independently, so you must accumulate 1095 days of physical presence in Canada over the last 5 years, at least 730 days of which should be in PR status. If you both are eligible at the same time, you can submit a group application, but if not, then you have to do it separately.

there is no such thing.. No one can sponsor someone who is already a PR or sponsor someone to be a citizen. and you do not qualify for citizenship seeing you havent been PR at least 730 days (2 years)... you won't be eligible to apply for citizenship until february 2026 and that is if you don't travel outside of canada from now till this time 2026. you need 1095 days in canada and 730 days (2 YEARS) of those days must be when you have PR status. all the years before PR will only contribute 1 year no matter how long you have been here in canada before PR. and if you apply with him as a group both your applications will be sent back, even his dispite him being eligible and he would then have to reapply again by himself.
