I moved to northern ON from Jamaica, so I can kind of relate. How many layers you wear depends on what you need to feel comfortable. You need a good coat for outdoors, do not skimp on your outermost layer. A good one can run you into the hundreds, but you will be wearing it for a few years if it is well-made. I have a calf length down coat, you might prefer a parka or ski jacket. You'll need coats of varying weight, , I have a light coat for spring/early fall, a medium weight coat for fall, and the down coat and a ski jacket for full-on winter (which can start anywhere from the end of October, forget Dec 21 as being the start of winter).

Look for brands like Canada Goose (VERY expensive), Sorel, Baffin, Choko, and Uggs, to name a few of the good choices. The North Face and Columbia are also popular brands where I live.

As for your other layers, you want synthetic (technical) fabrics or wool for your innermost layer (underwear, leggings/long johns, etc). These wick sweat away from your skin and keep you from over-heating, cotton will absorb perspiration and can actually contribute to hypothermia in the wrong conditions. I wear the same pants year-round, but trade my shirts/blouses for wool-blend sweaters in fall and winter, going from lighter to heavier depending on the day.

Daily weather reports will be your best friend in choosing what to wear each day. For my first winter, my husband basically chose what I wore every day. Don't try to dress like the Canadians around you, their tolerance for the cold is way higher than yours, you need to dress so that YOU feel warm.

Great last message. I recommend to cover all your body! So gloves, hats are important. Don't forget, it's really the wind that can be freeze you. If you move a lot, I don't recommend too many layers because you will be too hot!

I agree...Canada Goose is very popular here but also very expensive. I'm also from Texas and my husband (then boyfriend) also chose what I wore every day when I first visited him.

The clothes I packed were very thin (being from Texas) I had to wear multiple layers. I suggest buying a winter coat that is waterproof, wind resistant and thick and I also suggest buying snow boots, water resistant gloves, a warm scarf and hat. I bought mine from Burlington Coat factory in Texas. lol :) As for layers, each person is different. I use jeans, a sleeve less shirt, a wool sweater, a wind breaker, a scarf, hat, gloves, my boots and my thick coat on top when it's really cold.
