I am into a situation where my closed work permit extension in currently under progress with CIC. This was done online and I am expecting that it will take another 4-5 days max.
I have also received the AOR and want to apply for BWOP. If possible,I would like to have both WP's. But closed WP is of my primary importance as my company will not retain me if my closed work permit gets rejected.

The BWOP will give me options to look for other jobs once the current project comes to an end.
Seniors, please advise on the best possible way to achieve this. I only have another 4-5 days to apply for BWOP.

If you only have 5 days left to apply for BOWP then do it immediately.

Once you get the open one, you do not need the closed permit anymore.

Why would the application for an extension be rejected? If you have a positive LMO, this should be approved, right?

Indeed, if you do have a positive LMO, this makes you ineligible for a BOWP:

Please note the following foreign nationals do not qualify for a bridging work permit:

...
  • Foreign nationals whose work permits are valid for longer than four months and/or already have a new LMO that can be used as the basis for new work permit application

Hello thisisauser and LPS,

Thanks for your replies.
My WP is based on ICT and not an LMO. ICT stands for intra company Transferee.

Secondly, I want my closed WP extension to go through successfully. Otherwise, my current company does not keep employees on Open Work Permit.

My concern is: If I apply for BOWP, CIC might see that I am trying to get both WP approved and hence, might reject my closed work permit(which is of primary importance)

BOWP is something good to have as it will give me flexibility to look for other jobs.

thanks.

I got to know from some of the forums that you should not apply for OWP if you have/applied closed WP and vice cersa. Meaning, one cannot have two work permits active at the same time. Although, could not find the link on CIC site which approves this.

Second, why don't you wait until you get result of closed WP application. Cause, if its approved, you are good and if not, you can apply for BOWP.

Hm. Anyone else know about the intra-company transferee system? Is it under NAFTA? What are the risks that it might not be approved?

Your BOWP application is not prejudiced by having another WP application in process. Of course, if that other application is approved then you no longer qualify for BOWP, but in your case that's not a problem.

An intra-company transfer related work permit is issued when an applicant is transferred to Canada from their country of origin for work. For example, if you were working in Australia and your company has a project in Canada that they need you to work on, then they can transfer you on an intra-company transfer work permit. I don't think that a LMO is required in this case, however, I am not entirely sure of this. I don't believe it falls under NAFTA, as it is not restricted to countries participating in NAFTA.
