My Stepson is in Canada on a WX-1 Visa and has a desire to become involved in the trucking industry. He has an International Drivers which allows him to drive a commercial vehicle in Europe rated at 7000 kg on a single unit. Is it possible for him to get a acquire a class 1 license in Alberta without a social insurance number so that he will be more likely to find a sponsor

Job Offer........
Pre-Assessed..
He should go to a registry and ask if he can get a drivers license. However, I believe that you must be legally living in AB to be able to get a drivers license. If he were on a student visa or workers visa, he would be able to use his foreign license and a translation of it, either to exchange for an Alberta license or take a test to get an Alberta license.

Another option would be if he can go do his license in Ontario as you do not need status in Ontario to get a license. Not sure if that just goes for a regular license though or also for class 1.

Please keep in mind that they require anyone who gets a new (Alberta) drivers license, they have to hand over their old drivers license. You are not allowed to have two drivers licens'.

Also, you need to live in Alberta to get a license for Alberta.

Thank you for the reply
but my question was more about if an european drivers licence, C+E, that is the equivalente to your Class1 or Class3, is acceped to exchange for a Alberta's licence.
Assuming that the residence is Alberta and handing over the old licence.

Is it possible to do that?

Check this site for information on exchanging a license for an Alberta license: http://www.servicealberta.gov.ab.ca/1671.cfm
Thank you
i have already read that, but i dont quite understand this:
I have drivers licence B, C and D, thats about every car or truck as long as it does not have a trailer of over 750kg, and all Buses also( that is your class2 i think).
And im also thinking of applying for C+E that would make it possible for me to drive all cars Buses and trucks there are in europe (That would be your Class1 i believe).
Given my licences, would i be able to drive trucks in Alberta, or the only licence id be entitled to would be a Class5 ?
I'de be happy to take all those courses i read about like Safety, and air brackes and all, but would i have to pay for a new Class1 or 2 drivers licence?

Please say if i am not making myself clear enough, but bare with me 'cause im european.... :)

Best Regards, and thank you for your replyes

No, you can only convert a car license for Class 1 to have to take both the written and driving test as well as air brakes.

Thanks for the quick reply PMM but i didnt quite understood (sorry, i dont know if it was lack of my english or your punctuation) and pay for the full ammount again, plus all the trainning time?
Do the "Driving Schools" give you the apprenticeship also? So one can have at least some experience in order to try and find a job?
How mutch and how long is it?

1. Yes, you would have to pay the fees to obtain a Class 1 in Canada. You would have to take the Class 1 written, road test, and get the air brake endorsement
2. No the driving schools don't give you an apprenticeship, you pay them and they teach you drive and pass the test.
3. You have find a company with a Labour Market Opinion that is willing to hire you. Most will not touch you without 2 years Canadian or Overseas experience (which you have to prove) driving with a class 1 or overseas equivalent.
4. There is quite a good discussion at : http://britishexpats.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=118 about driving and obtain LMOS and licenses.

Thank you so mutch for making it simple.
That means im in a bit of a stall since im not a professional driver (i would very mutch like to be though) and dont have Canadian nor Overseas professional experience.
That makes it even harder to achieve. Almost impossible really...
I will take a look at the forum you sent.
Thank you again.
(I still havent given up though)
