Hey everybody!

I was on this forum last year while my BF was applying for his TRV, and he was approved! We spent the summer (May-October) in Canada and it was great! We want to do the same this year, but was hoping he could work a bit to help with the cost of being there. I've been looking into the Open Work Permit, but need some clarification if you don't mind!

From what I gather, he does NOT need a job offer or anything like that to apply for that type of work permit, am I correct? If so, in the application form where it asks for future employer details, we would just leave that blank?

What are the chances of success for this type of work permit? To clarify, he was granted a Multiple Entry Visa that is still valid until 2018 so we do not need to apply for another TRV. He is in his 30s, from Central America and speaks perfect English, even a bit of French.

Thanks in advance!!

What is your status in Canada? Are you a Canadian citizen or PR?

Based on the information you have provided so far he does not qualify for an open work permit.

I just looked through your posting history and see you are Canadian.

He doesn't qualify for an open work permit as of now.

The only way he would qualify for an open work permit is if you got married or live together for at least a year to become common law - then you sponsored him for permanent residency using the inland process and included an open work permit application (he would have to be in Canada for you do to this and would have to remain in Canada for the three years it takes to process the application). He would then be approved for the OWP around four months after the application is submitted.

Thank you for your answer!

Please take a look at the information I found. Would #5 on that list not apply to our situation? He does have a visitor visa valid for more than 6 months.. Thanks again! :)

No - this doesn't apply to him.

Your boyfriend has a TRV - this rule only applies to TRPs. TRPs are special permits that are granted to individuals who are otherwise inadmissible to Canada (typically due to a crime).

Got it!

So if we went with the scenario you provided earlier... The next time we go to Canada, we should apply right away for Permanent Residence, along with an Open Work Permit. Is he allowed to stay longer than his 6 months he has with the TRV while the application is being processed, or he has to go back to Guatemala every 6 months? And I guess the purpose of the Open work permit would be for him to be able to work while he waits through the process of the PR..

I'm a little uncertain if I would be approved as a sponsor. For the past 2 years I've been going back and forth between Guatemala and Canada and therefore have not had a consistent employment/income for that time. I do have about 35,000CAD in the bank, mind you I don't think that would be enough. I also don't have a specific "place of residence". I realize this is a different topic but if you have some insight I would greatly appreciate!! :)
