Clarification of parental sponsorship

Hi all,

I used to the search function first to see if I could find any information. I am resorting to a new thread and I'm truly sorry if the question has been answered before as I haven't been able to find it. I'm really confused about the parental sponsorship processing time. On the CIC website it says they are working on applications from Jan 2014. And yet they are looking to get 10k new applications for 2018? If they are still on 2014, don't they have to get through 2015-2017 before 2018 can even be considered? Or are they approving people who have applied post Jan 2014?

TIA!

There have been some applicants post 2014 that report having been started, but PGP is not a quick process for the most part. It’s essentially the same as “Sponsoring other Relatives” as far as timeline is concerned. There are still PGP applicants waiting from 2010 and earlier.

Oh my ! That's discouraging. The only thing holding me back from trying to move to Canada is how I can get my mother there permanently as she lives with me now in her retirement. I mean I know I would need 3 years of Canadian income above a certain threshold first but I'd be nervous to having to keep rely on the Supervisa.

The supervisa is an excellent tool to use, she can stay up to 2 years, then she just returns home for 6mths to a year, and she can try for another 2 yrs

Not only what’s noted above, but the three year Canadian income requirement isn’t necessary for a supervisa. You do need to meet LiCO, but it isn’t reliant on your notice of assessment. Verification from your employer works too. And there isnt anything to prevent you from sponsoring your mom while she has a supervisa.

Your mother can only move to Canada permanently once she has PR. As you know, this requires you to meet the income requirements, be selected through the lottery and then have her application successfully processed.

A super visa would allow her to visit Canada for extended periods of time - but not move here or live here permanently. It's reasonable to assume she would still need to spend significant periods of time in her home country. Also, as with other temporary visas, applying for a super visa does not guarantee approval. To be approved, she will need to demonstrate ties to her home country (e.g. property, assets, etc.).

Short answer: You should assume it's not realistic that your mother will be able to come with you when you move to Canada and live with you uninterrupted. You should assume there will be periods of time where you have to live separately.

Considering the future rules of parents sponsorship are completely unknown, future unknown medical conditions that may make a parent ineligible to be sponsored, and that so many people may want to apply in the future some people may never win a lottery spot... I would consider the strong possibility you may never be able to sponsor your mother for PR to Canada no matter how long you live here or how much you make.

If living with your mom is important to you, you may want to seriously rethink applying for Canada immigration in the first place. Or be prepared that supervisa/TRV would be the only options to have her here temporarily with you.
