Another option is to change her name after sending in the application and then updating CIC of the name change while the application is in progress. My wife did this and it was no problem. But as rhcohen2014 said, you have to inform CIC before they issue her landing document. CIC will usually ask for another copy of her passport right before they print the landing document because they know that many women update their passports with their married name after they send in the application. And the passport is the main document. Whatever name is on the passport is the name CIC will issue the landing document for.

yes, this is true, and i definitely agree it's an option for most applicants. however, for US citizens, it's pretty difficult to do now that US applications are getting fast tracked, so that's why it's recommended to do it before submitting for US applicants. The one way around it is to apply for a new passport as soon as the application is sent. That way the timing *should* work, so that the new passport can be used for PPR.

The week I decided to change my name in my passport I received my passport request, and it would have been a very tight timeline to do both, so now i have to wait until after getting my PR card to deal with it. PPR can come a lot quicker than expected!

I hadn't done mine either. Things keep snowballing. I hope to do it next week but things are going so fast, hopefully I'll be done soon so I may not have time, hindsight I should have done it before but we were in a hurry and also I'd have to go home to do it. Sigh.
