Hi Gurus,

A friend of mine just recently laid-off on his job from US employer. His status during employment was (H1b) working visa in US. His been in Canada for 2 years now on Canadian PR, his US employer only requires him to work remotely from Canada and visit home office twice every month. Two months ago his US company was downsizing and he was laid-off.

Where (US or Canada) and how can he claim unemployment benefit?

vierx.

Start reading here, http://workforcesecurity.doleta.gov/unemploy/uifactsheet.asp . It's not going to be that easy to get the money though. Even when you get the money, you've to proof that you keep looking for jobs and are applying for them. Anyway, that link probably has it all and it the rules depends per state

Also look at: http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/ei/information/outside_canada.shtml#How

He doesn't qualify for Canadian EI.

And I agree with mrFoce. It's going to be difficult to get US EI. But he can by all means try.
