My work history is as a contract worker ESL teacher. I am considered self- employed and have contracted with many different companies. In regard to work history, I should list myself as self-employed and in the description say that I am an ESL teacher?? Thank you for your time.

From the time I landed, I was not regularly 'employed' - was always a self employed contractor, so no salary slips or T4s to verify my credentials, even though I listed the places I had worked by name, with an address and contact number.

This can present itself with challenges, especially if you have a history of travel during your eligibility period. It could certainly help, if you added experience certificates from the companies who contracted you for work.

Okay thank you. Question: I’ve worked with quite a few different companies. Do I need to list all of them?
I have not traveled at all outside of Canada since landing with my PR.

Hello. When you listed the employers, did they end up contacting them? Just curious. I will let the companies know but some of the ESL companies I teach for are overseas. I was wondering about your experience.

During the eligibility period, I worked for only 4 businesses, so had experience certificates from all 4 and had listed them individually with start and end dates of the contract period.

I do not know if they were contacted or not. I wasn't working at any of those corporations after my application, so had / have no way of finding out.

I would recommend getting some supplementary evidence in place as well like rent receipts / contracts, mortgage papers or any other documents that prove your physical presence. You don't have to send it, but keep it ready in case asked.

Utility / Credit card bills are usually unhelpful, but regular transfers from your employers to your account could certainly help. I'm not trying to scare you, but I had a pretty rough time proving my physical presence here, because I had a history of travel, but it doesn't hurt to be better prepared.

Good luck.

Thank you for your time on this. You have been very kind to offer information and suggestions. Going through PR was so daunting and nearly took me down from the stress of it all, I just don't know if going through this again is worth it. Ugh!

It's not that bad, trust me. It just took a long time for me for a couple of reasons. I had to prove my RO, got into an argument with the interviewing officer and then finally when I had all my evidence in place (including travel history from a different country), covid struck and everything was shut down.

Stick to the facts, however incredible they may seem. Submit the application and then forget about it, unless the (lack of) Canadian citizenship is preventing you from leading a better life or applying for jobs. Don't check status frequently; it only causes heartburn.

It's taking a bit longer, coming at the end of a pandemic, but I am sure the system will pick up pace soon.

Sorry me again. I am not sure how to prove my presence in Canada during the time I wasn't working while I was waiting a work permit. Wouldn't they be able to tell I didn't leave the country by checking my travel history? I haven't left at all since August of 2017.

A copy of all pages of all your passports (valid during your eligibility period) would be a indicator of your travels (or the lack of them) unless you have been swimming across Lake Ontario to New York :)
