A Golden Rule: Just give the information they ask for no more. If there is any question about how you were maintaining yourself.... yes you can say I was on welfare if not then why give extra information that may get you in trouble. I said "MAY" because I don't think being on social assistance is a crime. I think the employment history part only ask for the employer(company+address) .. if you were employed or you say "Unemployed" without further details.

There is no problem with being on social assistance. This does not make you less qualified for citizenship and CIC will not "punish" you for the crime of being poor or out of work.

The only possible issue is if you were sponsored and the social assistance violated the sponsorship agreement. In that case, the gov. may go after the sponsor for reimbursement. They won't go after you.

They dont work at all.they are over 70 years old.

CERB is only for individuals who were working and then had to stop working due to COVID-19.

Your parents do not qualify since they are retired and not working.

I am hoping that there is a thorough accounting of who qualifies for this benefit after the fact since there seems to be no understanding of who qualifies.

Because no one seems to investigate whether or not they qualify, even though the Government has stipulated online who is eligible . I can for see the collections department at the CRA are going to be extremely busy in the future recovering funds that should not have been paid out

If your parents is on ODSP, they cannot qualify in any assistance whatsoever brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. They may earn less on ODSP but that is a fixed amount and it could not go lower. Its better not to have this temporary assistance if in the future they will get it again.

They just don’t qualify simple as that.

People seem to think why not try to see if I can get this ”free” money. It is definitely not free and just because you get it in your bank account doesn’t mean you are home free. Be prepared to pay back hopefully with a penalty.
