Hi All,

I have been living in Canada (Vancouver, BC) from 2019 on a work permit and have recently became PR in this year in January. My family stayed back in India while I was on work permit and have just joined me in August. I am on track to become a citizen in 2024.

My question is: When I become a citizen in 2024, would they be automatically granted citizenship? or would they have to complete their 1095 days individually to become citizens?

Thanks!

No automatic citizenship. They must meet PR obligations first.

No one will AUTOMATICALLY be granted citizenship. They will have to apply and each case will be judged on its merit.

With that said, your minor child will be granted citizenship provided you (their legal parent) have already applied for, and have obtained your citizenship, when you apply on the child's behalf.

Your spouse on the other hand, will need to apply separately and will need to satisfy PR (730 days or more in the last 5 years before the grant of citizenship) and citizenship (1095 days in the last 5 years before applying) residency obligations independently in order to be granted citizenship. Even if you're already a citizen, it does not automatically make her a citizen.
