I just wanted to detail my process for those that are going through or will be going through it as well. I'll update it as I go through it (this is mainly the beginning as of today, I'll be mailing everything out Monday.)
*My situation will vary from others, but it's a good place to start.*
Being that my mother was born in Quebec, CIC doesn't accept birth certificates before 1994. Obviously my mother was born well before that. So, she had to fill out an application for a new birth certificate through the Directeur de l'état civil. The fee was fairly nominal, I believe the original price was $35, but they recently changed it to $44 I believe.
Once she received that document, I was able to put the file together.
Obviously you need to fill out the application itself which you can find here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/CIT0001ETOC.asp#CIT0001E5
Then, as per the same page, you put together the necessary documents that correspond to your situation.
(Whether you were born in Canada, born outside of Canada to a Canadian parent before or after 1947, etc.)
With documents, if you are going to use photocopies, it's best to have them certified as a true copy, just to avoid any issues. (Not sure if this is REQUIRED, can someone shed light on this)
Also, you need to include 2 copies of identical photos, the specifications are very VERY specific, so please read that section carefully.
Pay your $75 fee, include a copy of the receipt as per the website.
*AGAIN, MAKE SURE YOU CHECK TWICE OR THREE TIMES THAT YOU HAVE ALL DOCUMENTS AND PAGES CORRECT*
Now...just mail it and wait for your letter stating that they received your application.
Good news is that the turn around time went from 12 months to 6!
If I missed anything, or you have any knowledge that might help on this subject or any odd situations, please share!
Timeline:
Application mailed: Monday 5-13-2013
Will update as more info comes in!
