Citizenship by descent?

My British born mother (born 1952) lived in Canada in the 1970s for around 5 years and during that time claimed citizenship.

I was born in 1988 in the UK and am now looking for move to Canada, can I claim Canadian citizenship by descent despite having never lived in Canada and my mother not having lived there for 40 years?

Could you please explain the process to me, the rules on the CIC site do not mention citizenship by descent.

You are eligible for canadian citizenship. You can go to cic website and read about new citizenship law.
Since your mother is first-generation Canadian (received Canadian citizenship through naturalization), you are eligible for citizenship even if you were born outside Canada.
All you need to do is apply for proof of citizenship which can be found in cic website.

My mother and my brother and sister were all born in Canada. Can I get citizen ship or a passport by descent? I was born in 1942.

mdmccann, I'm not sure about your status since you were born before the first citizenship act took place.
You could try checking this link. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/rules/index.asp
It has a questionnaire to determine whether you are eligible to be Canadian or not.

I live in New England area of the US and our family have lived back and forth from NH/Maine and New Brunswick over the years dating back to 1700's in St Stephens NB . I am definitely a US citizen and not sure Canadian. I am born before 2009. Never looked into but my son did all this Ancesty.com work and found generations of great grand parents are Canadian.

1. My great grandfather, Canadian born moved to US early 1900's to work in New Hampshire Mill town across the border and married and settled in the US and served in WWI with the US Marine Expeditionary Force in France. He is Canadian by birth my grandmother was born in the US so assume that makes her a Canadian first generation foreign born? Her son my father was born in the US and is still alive. So does that pass on Canadian citizenship to me ?

2. I have a second line that lived in NB for hundreds of years and during the great war a great grandfather from St Stephens NB was a ( 40 years old) carpenter and was recruited under the Emergency Ship Building Act and worked for Shattuck Ship Building in New Hampshire that was started to create wood merchant ships for the war effort. He met his wife and settled in NH. His father was in the Canadian Militia of New Brunswick (interesting to see the muster rolls in ancestry.com).

3. My great grandfather born in Newfoundland move to work in the US and next generation born in the US so does this pass to my mother who is alive and and then to me.

Your spouse is a first-generation born-abroad child to a native-born Canadian, so yes, he can claim citizenship by descent.
