Dear All,
Our PR card will expire in Oct 2015. My wife and children will complete 3 years (1095 days) of stay in Canada by June last week, 2015. We are told that if you apply by July 1 st 2015, you need only 3 years and from next year (if you are applying after July 1, 2015) you need 4 years as requirement for Citizen application. Is it true what I have heard?

I am not eligible for applying for citizen ship. I was the principal applicant when we applied for PR card. Will it be a problem for my family to apply for citizen ship with out me?

Thanking you.

first you need to renew your PR, PR should be renew 6 months before the expiration date
second, new rules is not implemented yet. lets wait and see.
third, your fam can apply citizenship even without you. :p

Thanks for the reply,
Some places it says PR renewal should be done with in 2 months. Are they strict about that? Will we be able to enter Canada in August with the PR card valid till Oct.

78 calendar days is the processing time for PR renewal as of now. You can apply for PR renewal anytime in the last 6 months for your PR validity.

I have travelled till last day of my old PR expiry date. I have enquired CIC about traveling to US after PRC expiry and when waiting for the new PR card to arrive. They said I can still travel and come back with expired PR card if I travel in my old private vehicle. Below is the excerpt from the email they sent to me.

If you are outside of Canada and you do not have your PR card or your card has expired, you must apply for a Travel document (permanent resident abroad) (IMM 5529) at a Canadian visa office before returning to Canada. The travel document is normally valid for one entry. Once in Canada, you should apply for a PR card.

For more information on the Canadian visa offices’ processing times, please contact the visa office directly.

Since June 28th 2002, all permanent residents returning to Canada on a commercial carrier (plane, boat, train or bus) need a PR card.

If you return to Canada aboard a private vehicle, the card is not mandatory. You can use your immigration paper:
• Record of Landing (IMM 1000), or
• Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM 5292 or IMM 5688).

An officer will ask you questions to see if you meet all of the requirements before allowing you to come back to Canada.

This says you "Should".
In instruction it says:

"Important information: Do not apply for a renewal of your current PR card if it is still valid for more than nine (9) months (270 days), unless it is due to a legal name change. Otherwise, your application will be returned"
