Is it allowed to apply for PR card extension and in case of delay apply for citizenship few month later with expired old card?

For example: apply for PR card extension in March and in case of delay with the production of the card(secondary review etc) apply for Citizenship in June or July?
If it is possible, what should be done later with that new PR card once it is produced?

You're required to possess a "valid" PR card* while applying for citizenship.

*That includes passports

Are we? Could you please show the link with that phrase, as I haven't found any indication that a PR card is needed

No, you don't need a valid PR card to apply for citizenship. It is only needed to return to Canada if you are traveling.
