Citizenship Application & PR Renewal at the same time!

Hi guys,

I became resident in October 2007. I was in Canada for only 2 months. I returned to Canada in March 2009 and my 1095 days of physical residency in Canada will be completed at the end of April 2012 (considering days out of the country during these 3 years). My PR expires in October 2012.

I have the following three questions:
1) Normally how long before expiration of a PR card does CIC accept renewal applications?
2) As I may want to travel abroad after sending my citizenship application, can I also apply for renewal of my PR card at the same time of sending application for citizenship?
3) how long will it normally take to have my new PR card? and does this application affect my citizenship application case?

Your professional advice will be highly appreciated.

4-6 months before the expiry is acceptable - I would actually start preapring it now since they have a backlog and if you want to be on the safe side, apply ahead of time.

2) As I may want to travel abroad after sending my citizenship application, can I also apply for renewal of my PR card at the same time of sending application for citizenship?
Yes, you can apply to both at the same time - it's two different type of applications.

Current processing time is 4 months - check this weblink for more information: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/perm-card.asp
It will have no effect on your citizenship - but you will be expected to show a valid PR card at time of citizenship test.

Good luck! :)

Hello,

one more thing the process time is pretty fast less then a month (my case - January 2012- ), after getting the approval you have to wait almost for 4 weeks to get the letter and 2-3 month to get an appointment to pickup the card ( if you'er travelling and your card had been sent to your local office you can bring your plane ticket 5 day before and pickup it the same day).

good luck

Thank you so much Amirchov and Jaroddz for your explanations and assistance.
Jaroddz, would you please explain a bit more about the process? first approval, then the letter, then the appointment?! which same day you mean? once I get the appointment date?

All right, you first apply timeline 74 days right now, ones is approved they will send you a letter ( 4 weeks from approval day) for the pickup day (your appointment will be 2-3 months after).
If you need your PR before you have to provide a prof of the emergency ( plane tickets...), you call the CIC to confirm that your card has been made and sent to your local office ( usual it takes 2-3weeks) and you go they 5days or week before you travel with your prof and you will be able to pickup your card the same day.

Good luck
