Hello everyone,

My wife and I are Canadian permanent residents, we live in a border city, our child was born in the US about a month ago, was able to travel with us to Canada without a visa (we just presented her US passport) at the land border, we will qualify for citizenship application end of this year, wondering if we can add our infant to our citizenship application without applying for PR?

Your child needs to apply for pr. If you intend to keep your baby long term in Canada, they need to get a record when they cross the border, which you use in the application for pr. I can't remember what it is called, but it can take 1-2 hours to get it from the border agent. You should not have the baby undocumented in Canada, they qualify for legal status but you must apply.

Thank you for the quick response. Yes the baby's passport was presented at border and she is on TRV. I will get the PR application rolling. Appreciate your advice.

Apply for PR for the baby now. At the end of the year apply for citizenship for you and your wife. Once your citizenship is finished, and your baby has PR, you can turn around and immediately apply for citizenship for your baby. If a parent is a Canadian Citizen, the child does not need to meet the days in Canada requirement, if they are a PR. Your other option would be to wait until the baby has PR, and then apply all together as a family. I do not recommend this - typically Citizenship applications for a minor child of a citizen parent are faster than applications of an adult or of a family.

Do you live in a US border city or a Canadian border city? You need to be living in Canada to qualify to sponsor your child for PR.
