Citizenship Act Changes: Bill C24

The Govt recently introduced a new bill C24 which proposes many changes including the increase of residency in Canada from 3 to 4 years before being eligible to apply for citizenship.
If it becomes a law it can affect all of us.

My question is to an immigration expert or a lawyer. How long do you think it would take for this Bill to become part of the law and be enforced?
What are the chances of it actually getting passed?

Thanks.
I hope this inspires some useful discussion!

When do u think the changes would take effect, some point in the next year?
We just don't know. Does the government want opposition support or not? Will there be any amendments? How fast can CIC make the administrative roll-out? These are all unanswered and unanswerable questions at this point. One thing is for sure, CIC is going to be hit with an influx of applications from people who just barely made the cut off under the old law trying to beat the clock.

Apparently the intent of bill which makes Citizenship harder to get but easy to loose is certainly is an insane idea and is objectionable but as far as processing time is concerned it is not big deal as overall time to become citizen will remain same -

Earlier System -

3 years (1095 days) of Canada presence + 2 years processing time = 5 years to become Citizen

After bill C 24 -

4 Years of Canada presence (Approx 1500 Days) + 1 year processing time = 5 years to become citizen

so timeline doesn't make big difference. It is the provision to revoke/cancel citizenship and appointing Minister's officer to sworn as Citizen vs Citizenship Judge. If citizenship becomes Ministerial thing then it will be chaotic as it attacks the substantial meaning of citizenship. Citizenship should not be like driver license where some minister's officer sitting in a office making Canadians of Alberta and Canadians of Manitoba. This idea and proposal is fundamentally flawed. Citizenship must remain a Judicial process and oath must be sworn by Judge not a officer hired and paid by Minister as Judiciary is independent and most powerful body in any democratic world.

I can't believe that Chris Alexander will propose such as stupid idea. Someone should ask Chris to why not give high school passed Cop, the authority to make Citizens? A cop who is being paid 13.25$ an hour?
The system that doesn't include judges works perfectly in the UK. It's fast (2 months v. 2 years), efficient and objective.

Hi,

I know this bill will affect people applying after it becomes a law, but what about the ones who have applied for citizenship before this bill but will be receiving it after the bill passes, as it takes time for the whole citizenship process.
Also does it equally affect the ones who are already citizens? Thanks.
