Depends, really. If she words it like her in-laws gave her their old stuff (assuming it's only a few items) you might get through. You should bring receipts or at least value estimates list for every item.

If you are hauling a whole household of stuff I'd hold off.

I've bought a few used things from the US and imported it myself and have never been charged any tax/duty. I made sure to have receipts that said "used item bought off Craigslist" for example.

Never been waived on new items though. And I got questioned pretty hard when we brought over a propane fridge for the cabin. I used the words "self broker" then the guard got all pissy and said I was using the wrong terminology. He thought I was bringing it over for commercial purposes. It was a tiny propane fridge. Not sure what he thought we were gonna use it for :p A tiny, expensive vending machine?

Perhaps I am not understanding about waiting until I get my PS.. I found this on a Canada customs web site last night !

RETURNING Canadians: May bring back duty free all household and personal effects including car, boat, aeroplane, provided they have been acquired and used six months prior to arrival in Canada. (After 5 years, the 6 months provision is eliminated). There is, however, a valuation limit placed on these goods of $10,000 per item which includes automobiles. Duty & taxes will be levied against any one item that exceeds that limitation. Canadians who have lived outside of Canada for less than 1 year are excluded from the speed program.

this following paragraph goes KINDA SORTA with what you advised,

IMMIGRANTS : This is any person moving to Canada, with the intention of establishing a residence for more than 12 months. An immigrant may import free of duty and taxes household and personal effects that were owned and used by him in his former country of residence.

They are saying "DUTY FREE"..

When we packed up all our stuff and put it in storage, we did a fairly decent Inventory and I estimated the values of everything.. we are not rich people so most our stuff is pretty old stuff.. I Did the inventory in Microsoft Word on just a Lined and columned layout,, It has description and Value of each item and then the Number we assigned to each packed moving box.. Soooooo we hope this inventory will be acceptable by Customs..

Your wife is not a returning Canadian as she is already living in Canada.

You are not an immigrant until your PR has been approved and you will be landing as a PR.

Anything you move before being approved for PR, may be subject to tax/duties.

Hi Rob_To.. thanks for your reply !

My wife returned back to Canada from America in May of 2016, when her sister became ill..then I came up to help her with her sister in Oct 2016..

That's why we thought she would be considered a "Returning Canadian"

Man this stuff can be so confusing..
So I guess we will sleep on the floors until I get my PR status, I sure as heck don't want to pay Duty fees and what ever other fees..

Thanks

Yah, unfortunately you can not import your belongings duty free until you land or after you have landed. On a side note, if you have some time to peruse, you can find all kinds of good clean quality furniture and whatnot for free or for pretty cheap off Kijiji to get you through in the meantime :)

trikiliki ,, Thanks again. I just responded to you on another thread..

We can just rent some stuff if we have to and like you said look around for some free stuff to get by on..
I was told I should be done and have my PR with in a year under the new changes cic made in Dec. so we can just wait if need be...

Do you know of a site that you can put in the value of your personal items and household items and see what fees you would have to pay to Customs ?.. our stuff is really old stuff and nothing we own is worth over a couple hundred dollars.. our whole house hold items may be worth perhaps 10 grand if that ...

Ok I don't know if I should ask this in here or start a new thread,, So ill ask here until someone yells at me lol..

Sorry yall, but we are past the state of confusion due to a Fake Attorney in the states who was actually running a scam and gave us a whole bunch of bad information.. I noticed that his web site has been taken down, thank God for that.

I have never used any type of Forum so this whole experience is NEW for us and we will make mistakes on here im sure !! I really am glad we found this site, YOU ALL are so kind and helpful.. Thank you so much !

NOW FOR MY QUESTIONS !

Today my wife received this in an email from CIC..

Citizenship and Immigration Canada |

UCI: ########
Application No.: F########
Quote these numbers when corresponding with our office.

Dear WIFES NAME,
This confirms that your application to Sponsor a Member of the Family Class has been received by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) on 2017/03/03 on behalf of the following member(s):
Dale MY NAME

IS this letter That I see people refer to as there AOR ??

Do we need to do anything or do we just sit back and wait for them to Accept our application?? and when the accept our application is that the AOR ??

ALSO-- I had to make an online account to PAY OUR FEES and print the receipts ,,

SO NOW DO I have to Register for another online account to get updates and status and stuff like that using this GC Key that I have seen mentioned on a CIC site about logging into your account ??..

Is the info I gave for my online payments account the same account for everything else, such as your application status and other information from CIC ?

AOR is your notification of application received. This is a good indication that your file is not going to be sent back for being incomplete and that it has been entered into the system and they have assigned your UCI (unique client identifier) and your Application Number. You will need these numbers to create your CIC account and to access file updates in ECAS as well as for any correspondence you may have to send in the future.

Next, in about a month or so you should receive SA which is your notice of sponsorship approval and they will indicate that your file will be sent to (I presume Ottawa) for processing. From what I have experienced, its the sponsor that gets these emails.

Trying to create your CIC account is a whole other fun kettle of fish, there are instructions here somewhere, you will have to play a bit with how you enter your information before you get it right. You only get 5 attempts per day so try and make note of the combinations of information you input so if it doesn't work you don't repeat it and waste one of your chances. I have seen people say to leave the passport info blank, and if its only you your spouse is sponsoring it may work with either putting the number 1 or 2 for number of people in the application.

If I am understanding you correctly we need to go ahead and LINK OUR APPLICATION Ill do that in the morning... Sooo now what do they mean by the following Concerning IMM 5669 ?

Submit your Schedule A – Background / Declaration (IMM 5669)
All applicants and family members over the age of 18 and all principal applicants (including a dependent child under the age of 18) must upload a validated electronic copy of this form within 30 days from the date of the acknowledgement email or letter.
To speed up processing and avoid delays, we strongly recommend that you:
· fill out this form while waiting for your acknowledgement of receipt
· make sure the form is validated
· save a copy so it’s ready to upload as soon as you link your application

They are using the term ( acknowledgement of receipt ) Does that term have the same meaning as the wording your using when you say,
(((AOR is your notification of application received))) and do we do it now or after our application is accepted ???

Can you plz tell me what is ECAS ?? ALSO all of our applications and stuff is mailed to CIC Mississauga,, not Ottawa ..unless everything goes to Ottawa ? Don't know if that's important or not.

Yes, everything is mailed to Mississauga and once sponsorship is approved it gets sent the to the appropriate visa office, which is why I said Ottawa, I think US applications go there for processing.

This is ECAS where you can also check the status of both the sponsor side and the applicant side of the application.
https://services3.cic.gc.ca/ecas/authenticate.do
Sometimes it takes them a while to update it though and it is not as detailed as everyone would like, but you will want to keep an eye on this as well as your CIC account updates, they are not usually done simultaneously or necessarily in real time.

Well AOR is acknowledgement of receipt, yes, same thing, means your application has been received. As for the IMM 5669, I am not too sure as we applied before the new application came out and we had included the completed background declaration form with the application and were not asked for it later. Whether or not you included it already, it appears they want you to upload it now once you link your application so you probably should just do it as soon as possible. You don't want to delay processing for any reason.
