China Birth Certificate Difficulties

I've already emailed the embassy, but they said they couldn't give any specific information.

We have done some research and tried to get the birth certificate required here in China, but seem to be unable to do so. When asking at the police station where his household register is currently located, they said he would have to go to the hospital in his hometown that has the records. However, he was not born in a hospital, and there was no birth certificate provided at the time of birth.

Is a birth certificate essential to the application, or would the hukou booklet alone be enough with an explanation of our efforts? I've seen in some places that he may be able to get it by going home to the police station, but I'm not sure if that will just put us on another wild goose chase or what. His hometown is 13 hours away by train, and he's currently working full time and very busy, so we'd like to avoid that.

What I was thinking of doing is applying first without the certificate, and with an explanation. His birth date information is already in the household register, and that's the original document we would use to get the birth certificate anyway. If they need the certificate I guess they will request it, hopefully not returning the entire application. Would this be a reasonable approach?

Thanks in advance

CIC is most likely aware of the issue involved getting the birth certificate. nonethelss it's possible to get one - we had to travel a lot to get all the paper work done. considering what you're applying for you might re-consider your priorities...

Thanks for the reply, and you're right, I should take their document requirements seriously and try to get all the documents together.

I guess what I should be asking then is can anyone who applied from China confirm that a birth certificate can be acquired from the police station in the applicant's hometown? Has anyone else gone through this same issue with a birth certificate?

You're talking about China, the land of corruption. Bribe them. Or better yet, save your money and use a bit of "guanxi" (sp?).

I would definitely get all the required documents. You never know how picky the visa officer will be, especially if it is possible to get the certificate (which I am sure it is). China is an extremely difficult place to get things done, but with persistence, anything is possible.

Solved! For anyone who has a similar issue, my bf's uncle was actually able to get the birth certificate for him in his hometown. I doubt this is standard procedure, but in small towns things can probably be pretty lax.
