Hello,
my visa under GTA just got approved, my wife's visa is approved as well with open work permit. We are planning to come to Vancouver on March 2 to start our new life. My job as a Project Manager is starting on March 15. My wife is pregnant and child birth is expected in Mid-May. As I understand it, we will not be covered under the provincial health care as there is a waiting period. What are our options and costs associated with the childbirth and after care? Is it possible to get medical insurance for the waiting period that will cover the childbirth?

Thanks a lot in advance.

I can't comment on the waiting period. I'm not familiar with the MSP program since I live in a different province.

It is not possible to purchase private medical insurance since your wife is already pregnant. It is only possible to purchase this insurance before an individual is pregnant.

I just asked to my friend, he said childbirth is approximately $30000 to $40000. Please get complete information before to landing. Medical is really very expensive in Vancouver if you don’t have MSP.

My MIL (visitor status) had an emergency surgary and stayed in VGH for a few days (back in 2019). It costed over Cnd$50,000.
Found this in recent news. This was in Alberta but I believe the cost won't be a big difference. Not sure if hospital in BC will ask for any up front payment as well.

Yes. medical is very expensive. Check with your employer about you and your spouse's medical insurnace coverage. I am not familiar with MSP coverage of foreign workers under valid work permit. But if she gives birth during the waiting period, it will be out of pocket and could be very very expensive.
No medical insurance (private) will cover pre-existing condition (e.g. your wife is already pregnant)

Can be anywhere from 10k for prenatal care and delivery if no complications, quick vaginal birth with no epirdural all the way to tens of thousands of dollars if there are complications and she needs to stay in the hospital or even have much more frequent monitoring, she needs and emergency c-section and needs to remain in hospital for much longer. A typical c-section without major complications is around 15-20k I believe. Vaginal birth with epidural in Vancouver is around 10k I believe. Every hospital and doctor will charge different amounts since there is no set private payment fee schedule. You may be required to show proof that you have the funds or have made arrangements for a private pay hospital birth if your wife arrives heavily pregnant. Obviously Canada wants to try to minimize both birth tourism and people not paying fir private medical services they receive.
If possible I would arrive before March 1st so your wait time would start March 1st. Obviously a lot easier said than done.
