Hi,

We will be applying to sponsor my 11 year old stepson from Florida soon and I wanted to know if I need to sign as co-sponsor on the application form my spouse will be filling out?

And is the wait time really over 2 years, even for kids??

Thanks!

I don't think you need to sign, no, unless you want to. Why did he not come when your wife did? I think time is measured in months for children, not years.

It is in months, and it is the same as spousal processing, so for US, if processed through CPP-Ottawa it should be under 1 year.

Thank you for your answer. He didn't come up with my husband because the boys mother wouldn't allow it. The child is a little older now and wants to live with his dad and his mom has agreed.

They are showing 26 months for the second stage on the web site so I am glad to hear that it will actually be less than a year.

The little man is very eager.

:)

As said above, the app would go through CPP-Ottawa, which has a posted processing time of 15 months. The app would most likely be done in around 8-10 months or possibly even faster.

In the meantime, if he is that eager to come be with you guys, he can enter as a visitor.

And he can immediately start school here as one of the parents is a PR. The only hiccup is medical insurance, if you are in Alberta that's a non issue because as soon as the PR application is submitted he would be covered under provincial health care as a dependent child of a resident, but other provinces have different rules.

Yes, I saw that he can go to school, but he won't be entitled to OHIP in Ontario until he is a PR.

I will have to look into the cost of temporary health insurance for him.

Another question - on the Generic Application form it asks what Visa office we want to use.

You have mentioned CPP-Ottawa - am I allowed to say that, even though he lives in Florida right now? I was going to put New York, but now I'm not sure what to put?

Thank you!

Yes, you would put Ottawa. New York would only be needed if an interview was needed, and for a child sponsorship, I don't see that happening. Health insurance is going to be your obstacle, I think. I would think there is a clause in OHIP for the dependent child of a Canadian citizen and Canadian PR? I would look into that a little further if it were me.

Thank you so much! This is very helpful!!

Can I also ask - does a child need to fill out the Background Declaration? The instruction says, "You and each of your family members over 18", but HE isn't over 18.

He should not need that form, no. He also should not need a PCC, only his medical.
