Hi we are right at the start of this process and I dont understand all the abbreviations on this forum. However. My hubby is in Toronto ,my children and i are in Australia. And we sent our application via the postal service to the Sydney NS office back in August. We sent it registered so we would have a confirmation it got there.

So far we haven't even got a email saying they have our application or anything. Waiting is not my strongest skill. Lol.

So anyway my children are now 14 and 18. The 18yo has always been iffy too whether he would move or not but has finally made his mind up to stay here in Australia. Is it better to tell them or let them process all 3 if us ? Will it affect our application in anyway if he is approved and then stays here?

I think leave the opportunity open and continue processing for all of you. In the event he changes his mind later on when all of this is finalized he can still come with you. If he doesn't end up landing, his visa will just expire and that will be the end of it.

18 is still pretty young so as a parent I would still leave the door open. He can always land with you when you come and go back and forth til he decides what he wants to do with his life or finishes school or whatever. He might find he likes it here and wants to stay, and if not at least he had the chance to make an informed choice. You wont be able to sponsor him after he turns 21.

From what I have gathered, you normally don't hear anything til at least 8 weeks or so after you send it, but they are apparently backlogged and it can take a little longer, it's normal.

I'd suggest to leave everything as is. Your child will need to do medical exam regardless of wheather or not he is coming to Canada. Get PR (Permanent Resident) visa for him, it will not hurt. When you get PR visa he can come to Canada with you (or shortly after you) just for a short visit, and he will become a PR. He does not have to live in Canada if he does not want. He will lose this status, of course, if he does not spend in Canada certain number of days, but at least there will be a chance for him to be able to live/study/work in Canada if he changes his mind and decides to join you (18 year olds tend to change their minds quite often). Alternatively, if you exclude him from your application, you'll have to sponsor him later if he changes his mind (you will have a very narrow several years window do it as there is an age limit) or he will need to apply himself and meet one of the independent immigration sponsorship programs requirements.

Agree with above so at least persuade him to travel with you when you complete your landing given once landed as a PR he can stay back in Australia for near 3 years before his residency obligation becomes an issue. Who knows once you all move he may even miss you all.

Thankyou for your fast replies. I'm glad it wont land us in any hot water. He has completed school has a steady job and a girlfriend . Atm he thinks the sun shines out his gf ass. Lol 3 years gives them plenty of time to split up if pr gives 3 years.

As long as he spends 2 years out the 5 years in Canada from the initial landing then he meets the residency obligation hence the statement he could stay away for near 3 years in that 5 years. Of course if he stays away for the full 3 he would need to stay put in Canada for 2 years but at least it keeps the option open to change his mind whilst he is still considered a dependant. Key thing though is for him to land and claim his PR status, doesn’t have to stay more than a few days for an initial landing although of course the return travel would be a pain.
