My wife and I are both Canadian citizens. I was born here and she was born in the USA but moved to Canada at a young age (and gained Cdn citizenship then). She still has family overseas and will be visiting them soon. There's a child on the way (months away) and it the plan might be to have it abroad. Unfortunately my job requires me to stay here and prohibits travel at this time....
I know that since I was born in Canada, our child has a right to citizenship (post 2009 law) but I'm a bit fuzzy on the procedure. My understanding is that, if the child is born abroad, the birth certificate with both our names as parents will suffice for paperwork proof (with all the other forms). This gets submitted to the local embassy and takes 6-8 months for processing. What about a passport? I suppose citizenship confirmation needs to come before passport? I've heard that temp passports can be issued but am unfamiliar with the process or requirements. Obviously I would like my wife and child to come back into Canada sooner rather than later.
Can anyone point me in the right direction for these answers?
