Child born abroad to PR

Hi all, I would like to know the situation for my unborn child.

1. We plan to give birth to our child in our native country, both of us are PR at the time of child birth.
2. Child‘s grandparents will take care of him/her while we will return and continue working in Canada.
3. When one parent apply for citizenship (expected approximately 6-8 months after child birth), then will/can the child become citizen too?

You'll first have to sponsor your child as a PR. You cannot add them to the application if they aren't a PR.

3. No, the child does not get citizenship just because the parent has obtained it. The child would only be able to get citizenship if the parent was a citizen at the time of the child's birth or if the child was PR applying for citizenship at the same time as the parent.

If you want the child to join you in Canada, you will need to sponsor them.

No - the child will not become a citizen. The child must be a PR and must meet the residency requirement at the time the parent applies for citizenship in order to qualify to be included in the application.

The child hasn't been born yet, much less sponsored as a PR, which would need to happen prior to the citizenship application.

Once you've sponsored the child as a PR, they can come to Canada. This will take about a year.

You shouldn't apply for citizenship during that time. That way, once your baby has arrived in Canada, you can immediately apply for citizenship and add your child to the application.
