The question written in the title is part of the Document Checklist and it has caused some confusion in our application.

My wife was brought to Canada by her father when she was 9 years old (in 2004). Her father was there working and when he was permitted, he took his whole family to Canada. She isn't sure if she got PR or citizenship, but she's learning more towards getting naturalized (citizenship).

Do we answer this question Yes or No? We're confused.

Hello there,

Have you or anyone else here figured out the answer to the above question? I have a similar issue that is perplexing me.
My Father immigrated to Canada with our Family (of Four) 20 years back. The IMM-1000 landing document shows us as accompanying family members to my Father. However, my Father decided to give up his PR after 5 years due to work reasons. Meanwhile my Mother is a naturalized Canadian Citizen. Now that my Father has retired from work, my Mother is sponsoring him. How do we answer the question in the document checklist: "Have you (the sponsor) previously been sponsored yourself for permanent residence?".

I was thinking it would be answered as "No" because she was not sponsored (by a PR or Citizen), but entered as a dependent (accompanying family)?
Or should we just play is safe and write "Yes" anyways, followed by the Name/DOB of the 'then Sponsor'.

Essentially, it distills down to this: If the principal applicant is entering Canada along with dependents who are accompanying him/her, are they considered sponsored by IRCC?

Someone please advise.

Thank you kindly.

Answer is no. Your mother wasn't sponsored.

It doesn't count as having been sponsored. My husband came to Canada as pr as a child as a dependent on his mom's economic stream application and we said he hadn't been sponsored and had no issues.
