cheap car rentals at Canadian airports ?

I was just checking the car rentals at Vancouver and Toronto airports for Dec-end 2009. They seem to be 3-4x more expensive than in US! Not sure if this is due to holiday season or if prices are perennially high. Any idea if there are cheaper options around to take care of basic transportation after landing?

Look for an off site rental in Richmond, and then take cab there from the Airport or be picked up. Lo Cost is one, Enterprise about $260 a week.

Also, there are some great "car sharing" plans from these companies. Looks like a good alternative to renting/owning a vehicle.
