Hi..I am student doing my masters. I did a huge mistake by stealing money from my employer (nearly 400$). I got terminated from the employment. I am asked to appear In the court on July 10th. I am charged for theft under 5000$ section 334. I am really guilty of what I did every second of if my life and this is my first offence. Please help me.,what should I do? I contacted a lawyer. He is asking for a fees of 1000$ and not guaranteed of discharge. Please tell me details of it. Will it become a criminal record? It affects my career? I feel so depressed

You need to talk to your lawyer. Theft like this is a hybrid offence, meaning that a conviction makes you criminally inadmissible to Canada. Additionally, you must now always answer yes to questions of "have you ever committed, been arrested for, or charged with" a crime.

No lawyer can guarantee you a discharge; that's not how the criminal justice system works. You can work with your lawyer to try to achieve one, that's the only way you're not criminally inadmissible to Canada.

I'm not a lawyer, I can't give you legal advice. You need to talk to your lawyers about diversion. It's up to the prosecutor.

These are serious legal issues. You should consult lawyers over such issues instead of random internet strangers.
