I am a permanent resident living in Montreal and want to exchange my german driver license into a quebec one. i have the EU german driving license (the small cheque card format) since 2002. Is its necessary to translate this one into french? i called saaq but got everytime a different reply.

and do i need to take any tests for the exchange, also do they require an eye examination?

any answer/help is appreciated.

My husband, British, went through this earlier this year. Just like Germany, Great Britain is amongst the countries for which you can get a licence exchange without proficiency examinations.

Basically, all you have to do is book an appointment (as you are in Montreal like us, it will be at the Henri Bourassa office) and take the requested documents with you. When you ring to book the appointment, they will give you the list.

The only fee to pay is the yearly fee everybody has to pay, plus the cost of the picture (which they take at the time of your appointment).

Hope that helps!
