OP is right and you are wrong. If you make refugee claim in Canada with valid temporary status, you are authorized to carry on with your studies until end of the authorized period. Thats the reason why they dont seize your temporary permits during eligibility interview if you have any. You keep it until it expires or after determination which ever come first. I asked IRCC Agent in person and she confirmed that. Read paragraph 3 copy paste
“Persons making a claim for refugee protection in Canada with an existing temporary
resident status do not lose their existing status. These persons may therefore attend a short-term course of study without a permit so long as they complete the course within the period of their authorized stay”
