My new husband and I are doing an outbound immigration application for me to sponsor him from the UK to Canada and to bring him here to live with me ...my Canadian passport is in my ex husbands last name and i haven't changed it yet ...I figured with our marriage registration saying my old married name and my new married name CIC would be smart enough to figure it out ...I didn't want to change it yet because i have all my visa stamps in it from going on vacations and visiting my husband and I will be using it for proof of our relationship ...my question is, once i have submitted our immigration application can i change it at that time or do i need to wait until after the immigration process is over and hes approved of his permanent residence? ...

You being the sponsor, it won't matter for immigration purposes. You can change it any time.

Thanks so much ...I wasnt sure if CIC might want to see the stamps in my passport for real or if my photocopies would be sufficient, so i wasnt sure if i could change it to my new husbands last name ...its so exciting now that i can change everything over to his last name as soon as the application is submitted ... ;D

You can still use it as evidence of your relationship even if you have changed your name and gotten a new passport. They give the old one back to you when you get a new one; usually they punch holes through the old one, but if you tell them you need the pages as evidence for CIC, they will only punch holes in the cover. At least they did for me.

I changed mine(i'm the sponsor) before I sent the application. I photocopied my old passport with stamps. However my new one did not arrive in time to go with the app so I put a note in explaining this and sent a new copy once it came in. HTH

Hi there,

I just stumbled upon this post and have found it very helpful. I have been wanting to change my last name but have not begun the process as I am unsure how I go about it, what steps to take, what documentation I need, and I thought it would affect the immigration process (I am the sponsor). Does it have any affect as to whether I change my last name name before I send everything of or once I send everything off? Or is it pretty much all the same? Also, to those who have changed their last names how long was the process of doing so?

Hi!

Have you submitted your application yet? If you have, I would hurry up and change your name in your passport, and send this update to CIC when they assign a Client ID to your file.
If you haven't, I would suggest you to rewrite your forms using your maiden name (or name that is on your passport). The visa has to be issued on whichever name is your legal one, and in Canada your legal ID as a foreigner is your passport.

Hi there

Thanks - luckily we have not submitted the forms yet. But i would have thought if our marriage cert was used, they would be able to put two and two together?

Also, i sat the medical examination under my married name (they took a copy of my marriage certificate and passport with maiden name on it however).

I want to avoid changing the name on my passport as this is going to take too long and i have run out of time already. Do you think it would be ok to rewrite the application forms to my maiden name, while my medical examination was performed under my married name?

Hi Phe!

I believe that they won't lose your medicals as long as you send a copy of the form signed by the doctor or the invoice, whichever was given to you as proof of medical examination. Either way it would be good to attach a sheet explaining the situation (that your married name was used when you took the medical exams).

I think you still have the choice under which name your application will go. If you want the visa to be issued to your married name, you could change it after you've submitted your forms (in your married name) and attaching a sheet explaining you will provide copies of your new passport as soon as you get it. Many people submit information after sending the application, like people that are waiting for the marriage certificate to be issued and they send a proof of marriage in their initial application, and send in a copy of the marriage cert later.
So you can do this, you can change your passport while you wait for your application to be processed, however, some people believe that submitting new info might delay your process.

Hi!

Sponsors don't have to worry about when they should change their name into married name. This is because there will be no visa issued to you, so all they need to see is that you are a Canadian Citizen or PR. If you're submitting documents that have different names (some in maiden name, others in married name), I would attach a note explaining you're in the process of changing everything to your married name.

CIC can only issue visas in the same name as on the passport. Yes, they probably can put two and two together but why go through the hassle? It's easier for you to change what's on the application now rather than suffer delays later because of confusion. Medical should be fine as is.
