Hi guys!

A little background on my story - My soon-to-be wife and sponsor and I are planning to get wed in the States. She could not come to my country because of work and I cannot come to Canada because I was recently refused a TRV. Our plan is to have a Civil wedding and immediately send the PR application the day after the ceremony. My question is with regards to name changes. Should my future wife change her last name BEFORE we apply for sponsorship? I believe changing of a last name may take a while. Or will it be okay for her to keep her maiden name and just do the necessary name changes AFTER the PR application process?

Thank you very much to the members who always share their thoughts! May the topics I post here be beneficial as well to those who are also undergoing this same struggle.

Good luck to us all!!

My wife and I have decided to wait to change her name until after we arrive in Canada. It would add weeks of delay to try and do it before we sent the application because she'd need to update all of her documents (passports, bank accounts, bills, driver's licence, etc) and there would be other implications with police certificates and other proof that we have included in our application.

Just not worth the hassle at this stage and after we land in Canada we can do it in our own time.

Best of luck!
M.

Thanks for the reply, MikeUK. It is very much appreciated. :)

I am waiting to change my last name until my husband is here as well. Less hassle since everything is in my maiden name still. There is no harm in waiting to change it and also easier in my eyes too, can slowly start changing my name over for the non-important stuff that will not affect the immigration process and then once he is here do the big stuff so there is not as much to do.

Thanks as well, Dayanara!! :)

I'm waiting to change my last name too. Don't want to add any delay on the processing and my passport expires next year anyway. Kinda sucks that my drivers license was just renewed in January (under my maiden name) and my Nexus card doesn't expire until 2014. Too many things to change (and not cheap) :S

I'm thinking WAY ahead here, but if you want your name change for the PR card, can you use the current PR card while waiting for the updated one with the married name?

i recently got married. should I ask my wife to change her last name to prove our marriage is genuine?

My wife has not changed her name either. We decide to keep her last name until I move there.

samba1234: I wouldn't think changing the last name proves it is genuine. A marriage certification proves it was a legit communion.

Hey Robby,

thanks for information. I am from India and I got married recently and my marriage is arranged marriage so there is not any details about pre marriage communication. So i was kinda worried and want to do everything to prove its genuineness
