I have a question
If I decide to go to Canada to be with my boyfriend for a period of 5-6 months, and we decide to get married after 3, and I take his last name, how would we apply for the Family Sponsorship Class?
Since my name will be different from the name on my passport, and I can't get a new passport while I'm in Canada, will I have to go all the way back home, get a new passport and then come back to apply?
Or is there another way to do it, where I can stay in Canada?

Also if I stay in Canada as a visitor, apply for an open work permit with the family sponsorship application, I will have implied status right?

if i were in your situation, i would not change last Name at this stage.

i would change last name at the time of applying for Canadian Citizenship.

Would that not affect the application in any way?
Would I be able to change my name after the family sponsorship application is accepted, or would that not be smart?

If it's that much hassle to get a new passport, just don't change your name. The name used in the application must be the name in your passport.

If you have valid status when you submit an inland PR app with an accompanying OWP, you will maintain your status.

However, depending on where you are from, outland might be a better option.

There is no law that says when getting married you have to take your husbands name, in fact Quebec even has a law that forbids a newly married wife taking the husbands name when married in the province .

As Canuck says get married keep your maiden name, apply for PR get approved and then worry about changing your name and passport , you will have all the marriage documentation to support the PR application. Otherwise it will just add unecessary hassle to an already stressful process and you will still be legally married anyway. Plenty of couples continue life with different family names as a matter of choice anyway.

i totally agree with you, and i would not change Name at this stage,

Up on receiving PR status, you will have to wait for 3 to 4 years for citizenship.

prior to applying for canadian citizenship, i would change Last name. once your last name is changed apply for Citizenship and Canadian PassPort

this is what i have done for my wife about 13 years ago. Please note your Social Insurance Number will not change and PR Number will not change
up on change in your last name

i would not change last name at this time, as it's tied with Date of birth, Education and PassPort documents, and later on Police Clearance certificate

A valid status, does that include just being there visiting?
How long does it usually take to get all the papers?

Also do you know if it's possible to get a work permit, if you have a job offer as a cashier?

Did your wife or you, live together before applying? I'm nervous about if I can even get a work permit at all.
Or did you apply outland?

Yes, being a visitor counts as valid status.

If you're asking how long it will take to get PR, an inland app can take 2 years or more.

There is no requirement to have a job offer if you are applying for the OWP with an inland PR app.

Well, I'm not married to my boyfriend yet, so if my visitor status expires before we are completely done with the application, I would have to go home, correct?
Unless I apply to extend my stay, but would applying for PR be a valid reason to stay in Canada?

That's why I wanted to come to Canada on a work permit, giving me longer to get all the papers, but I don't know if Cashier is a job that I could get a work permit for?

Yes, you would need to either go home or extend your stay. Applying for PR is a perfectly valid reason for extending.

In order to get a work permit before applying for PR, you would require a job offer from an employer with a positive LMIA. Getting an LMIA is difficult, takes months and costs an employer $1000, so chances are very low, especially for a cashier job.

No, in my case it was a traditional Hindu (Indian) Marriage Plus i got my Marriage registered at local municipal corporation Office, but during this process we did not change our last names as our passport had old last name

as long we go by rules we should not be nervous, after living in few countries, i am proud to say the country that i have adopted is a fair country and proud to say i am Canadian

lots of people try to fool around rules and are making our lives tough and system complex, in the Past Spouse PR was issued in Six months, no questions asked. but things changed because of ...........

don't change your last name and please go by the government of canada rules

That makes sense.

I can't seem to find out how to apply to extend my stay anywhere, I can't find the forms.

So if I go to Canada, and I plan to extend my stay or apply for PR, will I need a return ticket?
And do you know if I/my boyfriend would have to do any paperwork for me staying there?

Would it be possible for me to get a medical exam in canada? I won't have to do that back where I'm from right?
But what about fingerprints, don't they need that too? I read that you have to do that at home

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/extend-stay.asp

You should have a return ticket when you enter, just in case CBSA asks. Many people just buy a one way ticket here and a separate fully refundable one way ticket back.

For you to stay as a visitor, no, he doesn't need to do anything. For you to stay as a PR, yes, he most definitely has to do paperwork.

The medical can be done anywhere in the world as long as it's done by a Panel Physician.

You'll have to look into the specific requirements for PCCs you need.
