Hello everyone. I need your advice. My study permit was approved last week but the program I applied with is project management for 1 year. Am worried I will not be able to apply for work permit with it based on the new rules. Can I change to another program with the same school upon arriving in Canada? I want to change it to computer systems technician for 2 years. Will I be able get work permit with this program? Thanks for your help

No you need a new PAL and new study permit. Do agree that you shouldn’t do the project management degree especially if at a college.

Thanks for the information. If am already in Canada studying the project management program before I apply for the new study permit, will my current study permit be cancelled if my new study permit application is denied? And will it affect my future applications?

How is OP hurting your chances? OP is not doing anything wrong and got an approved study permit. OP, if attending the same DLI, you may not need a new study permit. You can change programs but ask school if new PAL is required. You want to do this before coming to Canada.

Thanks for your kind advice. I will contact the school and ask them

Sorry if I offend you man. I got admitted to the program before the rules changed and I have to change with it

You’d need to complete a semester before changing schools or you need a new study permit and PAL

I am pretty sure he is not doing anything "illegal" but I can bet he swore in his SOP he will return to his home country after finishing the "1 year course" but lo and behold , he is not taking the course to return to his home country. Why not just apply for the 2 year course from the get-go?

OP got approval for a program. All potential students swear they will return. No program guarantees PR, and OP would have gotten a PGWP with a one year program anyways. Complain to IRCC.

I'm not complaining about someone wanting a PGWP—it’s part of Canada’s immigration policy. What I disagree with is applying for a specific program and then immediately switching to another as soon as the application is approved. Did OP just suddenly develop a passion for a different course, one that just happens to boost their PR chances lol? Didn't IRCC introduce rules requiring students to complete at least one semester before changing their DLI because so many students exploited it? These kind of Tactics make visa officers question the genuineness of future applicants, potentially leading to stricter assessments for everyone. That’s just my perspective, though.

Canada accepts dual intent. Students don't have to swear they will go home after finishing their studies. They only have to swear they will go home if they are out of status.
