The question here is 'under which class/category are you applying'? The answer to this will determine how to proceed, becos, under spousal sponsorship you undergo medical at the time of application.

Thank you for this. I've been searching the CIC site for hours and seemed to find conflicting information about when the medical exam should be done. When I called to schedule an appointment, the woman on the phone seemed surprised I hadn't actually applied yet.

My fiancee and I are getting married in February, and then he's sponsoring me. So I need to get the medical exam right away, before we send in the application materials? The woman on the phone at the doctor's office said they'd send the info directly to the immigration office. Is this incorrect? Should I be sure to get something from the doctor?

...One reason I worry about doing it too early is that if the application process takes longer than a year (which the CIC website averages seem to indicate it will), then I'd have to pay for a second exam.

If you specify under which category you are planning to apply, then we all will be able to guide you with the right information. Since you have posted this in Federal Skilled Worker section of the forum, I assume that you are interested in FSW (for your spouse).

If you are applying under Federal Skilled Worker Class, then, do medical only when CIC instruct you to do so. Otherwise, your medical will not be valid. It is said that you must pass a medical examination before coming to Canada - not before applying. Check the link below to see the medical exam requirement for PR:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/medical/medexams-perm.asp

But, if your spouse is sponsoring you (Family Class) (in this case, the spouse should have been already either a Citizen or PR holder in Canada - some other categories are also eligible, but I am not sure about that), then you may have to do the medicals from a designated medical practitioner(DMP) prior to submitting your application.

Check the link below for Sponsoring the Spouse:

To find a panel physician near you:

There are many different categories and within the categories, in the past few years several changes have been implemented. What may apply to some may not apply for the other - for example - application process timings - those who applied prior to June 2010 had to wait minimum 3 years to complete their application process where as many those who applied post June 2011 on wards are already in Canada!!! Some of those unfortunates who applied prior to Feb 2008 had to wait up to 8 Years for the whole process, and some even got their applications rejected in 2012 after waiting all these years, due to some ministerial decisions. There fore, you may find multiple application process timings. Hence, you may find some information contradictory - but more or less, they are very specific and very professional.

If you have not done this before, then, evaluate your eligibility for Canadian Immigration Process - Do it yourself wizard. Please find the link below:

Hope it helps

Hello Members,
I'am canadian citizen, recently got married and in the process of gathering documents. My wife had already took her medical test (e-medicals). I am little confused after reading all Immigration Check list and forms.
Check list Says,
----------------
Include for yourself and each of your family members Copy 1 of the Medical Report - Client Biodata
and Summary (IMM 1017), signed and provided by the panel physician on your medical exam
appointment.
----------------
We only have the copy of E-Medicals Provided my Panel Physician. Wondering why they didn't update check list or am i missing something here..

Really Appreciate your reply,
Many Thanks...
