I will be sending my transcripts to IQAS. My passport validity is until August this year. I am interested in changing my surname to my married name. If I wait for my new passport (with the new name), I will lose out on a lot of precious time. So, shall I send my documents with my current name and then change while I await the ECA? At what stage further down the line would I require to show my new name and what would be the procedure then?

It might be possible to get a new passport in your married name under Tatkal. Probably in a week or so.

You would need to submit the necessary documents (affidavit for the name change, marriage certificate, etc). Do speak with the passport authorities for your region

The problem is, I have no documents in the new name, so my passport renewal is getting stuck. I'm not able to make change in documents because they are asking for a document as proof in the new name! o_Oo_O Changes through gazette will take a lot of time, so was thinking if it would be possible to change name after ECA is done.

That's incorrect. You're not required to go through the gazette process for change in name after marriage, especially if you want to only change your surname.

For this new passport, you must provide copies of your new address + other evidence that you're married (a copy of your spouse's passport/ marriage certificate, etc).

I suggest you use the 'Document Advisor' tool on the official passport website to generate the list of documents + apply under the Tatkal process. Do not take the 'help' of agents.

I recommend you do not change your name after your ECA process, but before it. In any case, your passport is expiring next month

I had enquired with psk and this is the reply they emailed me "For changing from Maiden to married name you have to submit one document in the married name. Even Marriage certificate not mandatory." So i enquired with both Aadhaar and pan card officials and the both asked for gazette notification.
I have the marriage certificate (in old name) and an affidavit declaring change of name, and they don't even want to look at these!

That's right. You can even submit a copy of your spouse's passport. A marriage certificate will help if your spouse does not have a passport.

You're going about this the wrong way. There's no need to contact Aadhar and PAN authorities. You will be running from pillar to post.... you will lose valuable time.... and the end result is: You do not need to submit a new Aadhar or PAN card to get a passport issued in your married name.

I recommend you use the 'Document Advisor' tool on the Indian Passport website + schedule an appointment for Tatkal processing.

It's a very simple process to change your passport from maiden to married name (i.e. change in only the surname without changing your given name)
