I would like to visit Canada on a visitor visa for work. I am curious if my history would create a problem in the visa application process. About 16 years back, I was deported from the US at the point of entry. This was under section 235(b)(1). It was primarily because they had found out that I had worked in the US while I was on a visit visa. Unfortunately, I wasnt told that I was also handed a permanent ban which prevented me from entering the US. I only found this out when I applied for the US visa last year. So bottom line, would my history be a cause for concern while applying for the Canadian visa? Will the Canadian authorities have the information of the deportation/life ban handed by the US authorities.

Yes - it's possible your history may negatively impact an application for a Canadian visitor visa or work visa. And yes - the US and Canada share information (plus you'll have to mention this deportation on your Canadian visa application since there is a specific question that requests this information). The US deportation demonstrates that you have abused visa privileges in the past. Having said that, it is good that 16 years have passed since this happened. This should work in your favour.

You can certainly give the visitor visa or work permit a go and see what happens. Make sure you fully disclose the US deportation on your application. Otherwise you'll end up with a ban from Canada as well.
