Hi,
I wanted to move to Canada and just looked into the EE program. I did my BA from 2004 to 2008, Masters from 2008 to 2010 and PhD from 2010 to 2015 - all degrees in the USA. I took a break from school, was in absentia status in 2013-2014, went to Asia and worked for a year. Can I claim one year of work experience since I wasn't a full-time student studying on campus?

I recently took IELTS and didn't do great. L 7 R 8 W 7 S 8 - overall 7.5

I am 29 - turning 30 in a month. I am single.

What can I do to improve my chances of getting an ITA? Should I apply for EE or FSW program? Your advice would be much appreciated!!!!

You will have to apply under EE - that is the only economic immigration program for Canada. FSW is one of the streams under EE.

You can claim that 1 year of work experience provided you can get a valid work reference letter from that employer. Search the forum for more information on what constitutes a valid reference letter.

Your IELTS scores are letting you down. Retake IELTS and get at least 8 in L and 7 in R/W/S. That will ensure you have a score close to 475 or so which will get you an ITA most likely in the immediately next draw.

All the best!

Thank you so much Asivad!!!!

Can I claim my research work (for phd) as work experience as well? Can I say self-employed during that period?
It's not fair for PhD holders to claim any part of our work experience (during full-time student) as real work experience.

What you think is the correct score for my current profile? I found different points in different sources.

Thank you so much again!!!

If this was an integral part of your academic course, I'm not sure you can claim that as independent work experience. If it was part-time work not related to your PhD, you can certainly claim that provided it was acquired outside Canada.

Check your score on the official calculator ---> www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/crs-tool.asp

Thank you so much again!!!

Thank you so much!!! I only have 414. :-[

Whether I will get a PNP invitation depends on which province I choose to live in my EE profile, right? So, if I check all provinces, is there good chance that a nomination from one province will come through MyCIC?

From what I have gathered, you have to stay in your nominated province before your landing procedure is finished. That will probably take 2 years?? Once I get PR, I can move anywhere I want.

At 414, you will get an invite from Ontario. Create your profile right away and apply to Ontatio after they send you an invitation. You can also explore other provinces - check their sites for more information. Also check forum threads about various PN programs.

Landing procedure is over when you 'land' in Canada for the first time after getting a positive decision on your PR application. Once you've landed in Canada and activated your PR status, you are free to live and work anywhere in the country.

Asivad, is everyone over 400 getting nominated by Ontario ?
what is the benefit of PNP to states if people are still free to work anywhere in Canada? would not it have any complications at stage of citizenship or renewal of PR status ?

Everyone with a CRS score of 400+ and having at least a Bachelors degree can expect an invite from Ontario NOT a nomination. The invite can translate into nomination provided the applicant sends in a complete application to Ontario with 1500 CAD fee and before their quota runs out for that year (for 2015, quota for EE was 2700).

Benefit of PNP is that provinces get a lot of PRs settling down in their province and, in the absence of legitimate legal advice from CIC and provinces, failing to recognize their mobility rights enshrined in the Canadian constitution thereby continuing to live and work in that province. Of course, there will always be many immigrants who deliberately want to live in PEI or NS for their own reasons but I'm guessing that the vast majority continues to live in their nominating province because they are unaware and/or unsure of their legal rights. No complications are expected while applying for citizenship ore renewal of PR status - PR is granted for Canada not for a province.
