Dears,

Is there anyone who did CGA?

How is the pattern of exams? Is there a pass mark? Can we re attempt if we dont reach the mark?

Thanks
Ashy

Hi Ashy,

I saw on one of your posts that you are an ACCA Member and as such, you just need to approach CGA(Now CPA in Ontario) to apply for their membership without writing any exams. You only need to attend a seminar after your ACCA membership has been confirmed by CGA(CPA). ACCA and CGA have MOU that allows easy transition of members between both bodies and that still stands as of date. The MOU could change in the future but has not yet changed.

I had written to CGA and they told me I need to do " Overview on Tax and Law" course and present them with the certificate.
Do you have any idea about this?

Dears,

Any update regarding CGA course? Anyone who did it?

Ashy
Hi Ashy,

I took this course some time back. It was a broad overview of the Canadian tax and business laws, which in my view, were not significantly different from the UK laws taught in ACCA. The course was followed by a test comprising MCQs. You will need to send the course completion certificate to CGA (now CPA).

Thank you so much for your reply.. Its a relief I could find someone! :)

Please, I have few more queries in this regard. Kindly help me on below:

1. Is there a time limit to complete studying the online course?
2. Is there a minimum mark to score in MCQs?And if we dont get it can we try it again in same online product?
3. Please could you tell me in detail the steps you did for application? What all did you send them initially?

Thanks in advance

You are welcome. I remember it was a fairly basic course and I completed it in less than a week. There were around 5 MCQ-based quizzes which needed to be passed in order to obtain a certificate. There was a minimum passing requirements for the quizzes but I can't recall how many marks now and actually I re-did certain quizzes until I passed :D

So the steps were like this..

Requested ACCA to issue me a letter of good standing in prescribed format

Completed the application form for membership of the CGA Canada

Completed the online course and generated the certificate

Sent all the above documents to CGA Canada by email and requested OBU to send transcripts directly to CGA Canada

The membership was then approved and I was requested to pay the applicable fees.

Hope this helps!!

P.S. May I ask what is your immigration status. I am currently in EE pool waiting for ITA :)

Thanks, That's great guidance for me... Hope you are ok with me if I ping you when I have more doubts in future,

Just one more thing now... So you din't send your ACCA letter and application form first to CGA? I mean I thought there was something like they will let you know if you are elligible for the course or not? Please guide.

My immigration status... I completed ECA and now re doing IELTS as I missed it by 0.5... :(

Sure, I would be happy to be of any help :) The steps above are for obtaining the membership. ACCA members are required to do the course unless they have studied Canadian tax and law from an institution in Canada recognized by CPA Canada. So, if you will send them your documents, they will ask you to complete the course and send the certificate before proceeding with the membership process.

Good luck with your IELTS. I also did it twice to get required score.

Hi dear friend,

I am back to our conversation after a long time :D

What is your immigration status? Did CGA help you with your job hunt in Canada?

Hi Ashy! My application was approved recently and I got my COPR. I am planning to relocate after winter. Currently applying for jobs online but the response rate is low. The qualification should help eventually because it is listed as a requirement in many job postings.

Did you receive your PPR?

Dear Friend,

How are you? I am back again :)

I saw in email correspondence with the officials for above course that it mentioned CPA British columbia...

Was this what you completed?
Does this mean this CPA is only valid if we r working in BC?

Please guide me.

Hi Ashy. I'm doing well, thanks. Happy to hear from you and hope all is well.

Yes, as you noted, the MRA was between ACCA and CGABC which got transferred to CPABC upon unification. This is the one which I completed and entitled me to use CPA, CGA designstion.

My understanding is that we can engage in public practice only in BC if we meet certain additional requirements and obtain license. However, the designation is accepted for non regulated (i.e. other than public practice) finance roles across Canada.

Let me know if you have any further queries. How is your immigration progressing meanwhile?
