Certificate of Departure with no deportation order....what next?

I have some friends who managed to obtain a visa to the US then tried to cross the border into Canada but didn't know about the Safe Country agreement and so they tried crossing at a regular border crossing. They were issued a IMM056 Certificate of Depature and none of the departure order boxes were checked off. There is simply a signature beside the first depature order line and the date stamp is actually on the next line (that's concerning?). We didn't know they were going to attempt to enter Canada to claim asylum otherwise we would have told them to cross at a different place. Can they attempt to do this now?

They were given no other documentation (letter, removal etc)

No they no longer have the option to claim asylumin Canada.

Do you know the basis for this? Every reference of IMM056 is given with reference to a removal / exclusion or deportation order which it appears they did not receive. Thank you for your response

Thank you. We have since found out that they had received additional documents - likely the removal order. not sure what options they have now other than to claim asylum in the US

Get the education and skills to qualify for economic programs like express entry. Otherwise, claim asylum in the US if they are truly in need of protection which is what they should have done in the first place.

They should be consulting with a lawyer to see if they have any options or should apply for asylum in the US. We only know a portion of their case. We don’t even know if they have a strong case for asylum in Canada.
