Hi Everyone,

This is an excellent resource. So happy I found it.

My wife and I have been married for two years, living in Toronto. She is a U.S. citizen, living and studying in Canada since 1999, she graduated from two Canadian Universities and has a Masters degree, as well as working professionally here since 2007. We are awaiting our first child very soon and are finally deciding on a permanent immigration path for her and have spoken to lawyers, but have got conflicting information.

Should we pursue CEC or Spousal sponsorship? Pros and cons would be great. Some lawyers say do CEC because she is very qualified, some say do Spousal because it's virtually guaranteed in our case, as I am a Canadian citizen.

Any help or advice would be highly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi

Spousal would definitely be much faster. American apps are flying through Ottawa in about 6 months or less right now.

Thanks, but don't the sponsor's (my) applications take quite a long time?

We are ideally looking at which application path would be fastest overall.

Thanks again.

This is a surprise. Processing times posted on the CIC website are much much longer - First stage (sponsorship approval) is taking 44 days, second stage (PR application) at CPC-Ottawa is 16 months. I don't follow the family class forum tho -

Generally, CEC applications are faster, but Family Class is probably more of a sure thing. Processing times change, tho, and it takes time for these changes to be reflected in the posted estimates.

That 6 month timeframe that I said actually includes both steps. Spousal is definitely faster. The posted processing is NOT an average. It's how long it took to process 80% of applications. Straightforward apps are significantly faster. I suggest you head over to the Ottawa thread, as that's where American apps are processed.

My friend is in the exact same boat. He is Canadian and his wife is British. Applied under family sponsorship and it has already been over 11 months. As canuck above suggested, check out the Family Sponsorship thread to check average processing times.
