I started full time studies in Canada from September 2008 and graduated in december 2010. During this time I completed 4 academic semesters (4 months each) and 2 co-op's but between January 2009-April 2009 I was not doing anything since I could not find a co-op placement while being registered for co-op on college website. Some of my friends say that I was supposed to leave Canada for those 4 months since I was neither doing academic semester nor a co-op for that time. I am about to complete my 1 year work experience in January 2012.

Will there be any problem regarding the semester that I took off?

1. Don't listen to your friends. Most academic years consists of 3 semesters of 4 months. Most students only attend for 2 semesters a year. So you are fine.

Yes Don't listen to them....

Technically 1 year study consist of 2 semester and you get 1 semester off to travel or work (if you have off campus work permit during study) or time off.

So should not be any problem when you will be applying for PR :)
