CEC – Getting a 2nd BOWP if the first bridge isn’t long enough????

Morning everyone,

I had a quick question on applying for multiple BOWP’s.

A friend of mine mentioned that if you haven’t received an answer on your CEC application by the time your BOWP expires, you can repeated the same process and get another BOWP while you’re still waiting.

I know it’s a new system so I don’t expect anyone to have done it, but does anyone know if this is true?

Regards,

Pete

Yes it is possible. On case by case basis.

"The open WP is to be valid for the duration of one year from the date of issuance. Although the PR application should normally be finalized within a year, subsequent requests from applicants to extend their stay on an open WP will be considered on a case-by-case basis. "

So, yes, its possible...but CIC will make that determination on a case by case basis.

If you carefully read the eligibility criteria
"Bridging Open WP – Eligibility Parameters

To be eligible for a bridging open WP, the following parameters must be met:

The foreign national is currently in Canada;
They have valid status on a WP that is due to expire within 4 months;
They have received a positive eligibility decision on their PR application under one of the Economic Class programs above; and
They have made application for an open WP.
"

it doesnt say that you should be on a PGWP. just says that you must have a valid work permit. BOWP is a valid work permit and thus, you are definitely eligible to get another one.

Good luck...!

Thanks for the kind responses.

Yes, the 'case-by-case' basis is a little off putting, it does sound to me like saying, 'we can just reject you for no reason'

But I think 'from_mumbai' is right. I hadn't thought about the things in such literal terms, it does just say that you need a 'valid work permit' to be eligible, I guess it doesn't matter if it is already a BOWP.

The reason I ask is that I already have a WP now that expires on the 1st July. But I was worried that if I sent off my application for a BOWP now and it gets approved very quickly, I'm going to have needless lost a couple of months on my current WP.

But as long as I can apply for another BOWP if I need to, that's okay.

They aren't going to reject you for no reason. They have discretion as they will only want to give it to you if you are eligible and it is really required.
If the situation arrises and you meet the criteria, it will be fine.

Relax and don't worry about things out with your control - it wont help! :)

People worry too much! Pete, bro...dont sweat the things you cant control.

First off, they wont just refuse your app for NO reason. If they refuse it, there will be a reason. Besides, they always provide at least a semi-detailed rationale for whatever decision they make, and you will know it. Also, you can always re-apply. Yes, its a hassle and it costs, but you have the option.

As for the second portion - timing - you cant know what's going to happen. I'm on the same schedule as you...my permit expires July 1. But, I have already applied for a BOWP. If they do skim/take off some months from my other permit - then I'm S.O.L. hehe :p Jokes aside, if they do take anything off, and they still dont reach a decision on my file, I will just apply for another BOWP.

In any case, it takes them anywhere between one and a half (1.5) to two (2) months to process these permits. If the volume drops, it may take just over a month. I would still assume the average to be around 40 days, if that helps. :)
