Well, what are your skills? What education do you have? What did you plan to do here before you arrive?

Not really risky at all. Canada has lots of opportunities, especially since your English is pretty decent. Have you tried looking for jobs and sending in resumes? What city are u in?

I wont lie, I am terrified of the actual move there. The packing, unpacking, writting of the goods to follow list, searching for a job, finding a job that pays well enough, the possibility of going back to school! I started my nursing degree but with all that life throws at you....i have yet to finish! So I am a nurse assistant until I finish my degree.

People claim I will be able to find work anywhere. But i am afraid that they will see me as the American that I am and not hire me -- but instead hire a Canadian who possibly might have less skills or experience than me soley becuse they always say we are just trying to steal their jobs

I have been here for over 11 years and never had anyone accuse me of stealing their jobs here, I dont think you need to worry about that.

i'm a bit worried as well, but i plan on studying once i get there so Canada can offer me better education opportunities. i worry about the equivalation of the studies made in my home country ... hope i don't need to do any 'courses' in 'CEGEP' before university, becuase they're in french (Quebec's post highschool education, not sure if the whole country has it). and my french is not the worst but not for studying in french.

i worry about a lot of stuff, but when i think that we won't have to leave each other at the airport again, it's all worth it.. all the waiting, frustration, loneliness.. love takes you a long way for sure :)

When supply is high than demand, there will always be scarcity of jobs specially for the new immigrants. Many people with bright career in home country do odd jobs just for survival. People with lot of money can try business, others may avail specialized education, higher education and get job eventually with repeated try. Employers want Canadian experience.Because they don't want to experiment with new comers with zero Canadian experience. The best thing would be to get some skill based training or refresher's training in Canadian school while doing any odd jobs that are available now and then look for a suitable job commensurate with your expectation. You have to bring good amount of funds to keep rolling during the initial days.

I came from the UK, I am a self employed house painter.
My wife and I just sent off, application forms for PR here.

At the moment we are in Beijing, my wife is Chinese.

You won;t have much luck applying for jobs until you get to Canada.

Canadians are more welcoming of UKers VS USers. My grandma in law was from England and has lived in Canada for 50 years...... However she has even accused me of just wanting to steal jobs from real Cabadians! She had to be reminded that she once was an immigrant.

I hope she said that in jest. Otherwise that is a very ignorant comment... especially to her granddaughter-in-law!

Also Canada has warmer ties to the UK being a commonwealth country and ties to the Crown. the UK is considered the "motherland" for the anglo Canadian. The USA is a renegade land that broke from the Crown and once invaded what is now Canada. There is also the whole "little-brother" complex. But any "issues" are really mild. I did not have any real issues when I first immigrated to Canada.

i would definitely recommend getting some kind of education/certificate in canada. many times your education/degree from back home won't be recognized by the companies unless you have huge job experience. certain fields like engineering, nursing, medicine, business, law etc are regulated and they would require you to get a certificate in order to practice. look into it before you move and you will be ahead of the curve once you land here.
