Guys,

I know that ppl usually say not to take more than 10,000CAD in cash when landing (Otherwise you have to mention to the immigration officer that u r carrying more than that). Is that amount per person? meaning,if my wife is traveling with me,so we are eligible to carry 20,000CAD?

Kindly clarify

I can't see why is it a problem to report all the cash you are bringing into the country? It is even recomandable since you are going to deposit it to the bank eventually and you need a slip from the airport where you claimed how much money are you bringing in in cash. You can't just drop in bank and throw C$50.000 in cash, you need to prove the origin of that money.
Real problem is with how much cash you can leave your country. It is 10.000 eur for my country, I don't know how much is for the others.

you can bring as much money as you want - by means of Travellers Cheques / Demand Drafts too,
or you can open canadian bank a/c while in your country, transfer money and show its statement as prrof of fund.

dont carry too much in your hand

You can carry as much as you want. All funds carried or declared on 1st landing are customs and tax exempted.
I did not carry any cash, but declared 22K CAD as my balance in my Indian account.
I did show a proof of funds statement from my Indian account to back my claim.
No hassles at all.

Hi Alok, I had a query. Did you carry any Canadian funds i.e in Canadian dollars (in any form, tc/dd etc.,)? or did you just show the bank statement from India.

That's for people who think that declaring is bad for some reason. It's perfectly acceptable to declare, and not a bad idea even if you have less than that. It doesn't hurt to have cash, and declaring avoids issues with exchange rates, or what person has so much money.

You are eligible to carry hundreds of thousands of dollars, or millions of dollars, should you wish to do so.

If you did not carry any cash, how did you able to buy those immediate needs (in your first few weeks after lading), say bus tickets? or you have a family/relatives/friend in Canada who helped you with this? Because if an immigrants who has no relative or friend on their destination province, it's better to at least have a few Cash (Canadian dollar), with them to use on their first few weeks because if you deposit and in-cash your demand draft to the bank it may take few days for clearance. I guess, it's good to be very specific and in detail when replying

Hi Milsrome.

I have been very clear in my reply that I did not carry cash.
For all my immediate purchases, I used a little modern invention called Debit/Credit cards.
And whenever I needed cash, I just used by debit card to withdraw CAD, as much as I want.
The equivalent got automatically deducted from my account in India. It is really that simple.

It all comes down to personal preferences.
As I said in my earlier comment as well, you can carry as much cash you want. Even a million dollars.

For me, it was a much simpler option to use my plastic cards instead of cash or cheques/drafts.

Can you suggest which bank in Canada you applied while you were still in your home country/ What's the process and the Canadian bank requirement?

Appreciate if you can reply.

So, I understand you open a Canadian bank while you were still in your home country before your landing in Manitoba last year. May I know which bank and what is the process and requirements? The person to contact/or their email address. Would be helpful if you can share it with us.

Appreciate your response.

Just go to HSBC bank in your home country and ask them to assist you in open a HSBC Canada bank account.

Scotiabank has tie ups with a lot of banks outside Canada. You can also check with HSBC.

I did not open a Canadian bank account as I had International Credit and Debit cards, and most of the banks in India allow overseas transactions and cash withdrawals using their credit/debit card.

Always is better to declare even if you are close to $10.000CAD.

If you are carrying 10k and something in your local coin it's more than 10k and punishible, don't take the risk.

Money, traveller checks and similar counts.

Note 10.000$ is a "party" o "family" limit, not per person if traveling together.

See the Declaration Form link:
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/forms-formulaires/e311-eng.html

If you see Border Security TV show you can find some people was caught with more than 10k paying fines.
Not need for it, just declare it. It's more than reasonable you need money to establish here.

I didn't bring more than 10k because I don't like to travel with that amount, I made wire transfer between my country bank a my new Canada bank.
