Hi,

My husband is an canadian citizen and I am an Indian citizen. My husband has applied for my PR and we are moving to canada. We are living in USA now. My husband is moving as a citizen and I will be going with him on visitor visa as my PR file is still in process.

How much my husband can carry as a citizen returning after 5 years? I believe its 10,000 CAD but please confirm.

How much i can carry as a vistor while accompaning my husband and how much i can carry when i will get my PR from buffalo office?

You are required to declare currency in excess of $10,000 if you have that much with you. That limit applies to every traveler.

If your husband is moving his personal effects from the US back to Canada, he needs to fill in a B4 declaration (for all the stuff he wants to bring back, including things he will bring at a later time.) At the border they will process his paperwork, stamp things and welcome him back home. There is no duty for personal effects returned in this way (there are restrictions on selling them within 12 months of returning) and automobiles must be both exported from the US and imported into Canada, which may involve fees.

There are currency limitations (anything that is demand payable, including cash, bearer bonds, negotiable instruments, etc.) This is about money laundering and you must declare anything in excess of $10,000.

When you obtain permanent residency, you can bring your own personal effects into the country as well - the same form (with a different box marked) and the same process (declare EVERYTHING you will bring into Canada as part of moving permanently.) Again, there is no limit, but you are required to pay duties on any items that you sell within 12 months of bringing them into Canada via this process.

He can carry as much cash as he wants, but anything over $10,000 must be declared. The rule is the same for you when you become a PR. I strongly recommend bank transfers over cash though.

If you are asking about personal goods, he can import all personal goods duty free as a returning resident unless the value of one particular item is more than $10,000. Then he is subject to import tax (or duty not sure the correct term) for that item.
