Hi,

I got accepted to Carleton. Can anyone who's already started studying there inform of how to apply for a TA position?

I am in Master of Engineering - Department of Electronics and registered for the following 3 courses so far, but don't know any profs there yet:
- Advanced Topics in Electromagnetics
- Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit Design
- Nonlinear Microwaves Devices and Effects

Thanks for any info,
Sandra

I'm an Junior year undergraduate TA here at Carleton university. For my 3rd year courses. I have a bunch of grad school TAs proctoring tests and conducting tutorials. Well, It's just 3 hrs a week and they pay you 20$/hr. That's quite less compared to the work that they ask you to do. The position is more of correcting Answer sheets and reviewing problems rather than assisting students.
I'm quite confused that you don't know your supervisor for grad school. Most grad students choose their supervisor before they even apply to University.Well , I'm not sure about that.

Anyways, You're gonna have a wonderful time here in Ottawa.

I don't know how you managed, then. But I don't know anyone at Carleton and find it weird to ask a random person /teacher I don't know to be my supervisor. Also I am doing MEng not Masc therefore I won't be presenting a thesis.

Congrats if you found someone beforehand. I see many students here applying in multiple places so I don't know how much they bother getting supervisors for each before applying.

Anyway if you do know what the process is for applying please let me know. Apart from talking to some professor what else could I do? Are there forms to fill or a list of positions anywhere?

Thanks,
Sandra

You could either apply via Carleton central or via your professor. The Carleton central route takes ages and you would put you through a bunch of interviews in order to qualify for a TA position. Overall , I don't think it's worth it. You can be better off finding a decent job outside campus rather than logging only couple hours as a TA. After landing here , You could either talk to me or someone who has some good connections to get a nice job outside. If your motive is to not make money and gain teaching experience , You'll have to take the TA position.
