call Aviva Insurance. When I first got to Ontario, it was nearly impossible to find a rate under $300/month. Aviva covered me for just over $100/month , and almost 2 years later, i'm now paying less than that a month. Definitely worth calling them instead of going to the big guys. Of course, i'm only insuring 1 car, so i'm not sure how it compares for 2 cars. i do know they offer discounts for multiple insurances.

Thank you. I will check Aviva but we already took the new coverage from November 17 from TD!

I can honestly say I have not heard of this. Certainly was not an issue when I moved to BC in 2009. It also seem "unCanadian" and discriminatory. Driver's licence is a driver's license. If it is legal for use anywhere in Canada I do not see how they could legally penalize you for such a thing.

In any case if you want to be absolutely certain, my suggestion is that you contact any of the ICBC autoplan insurance brokers directly. This site will help you find a broker to talk to : http://www.icbc.com/locators/Pages/default.aspx

I had a peek on the ICBC website http://www.icbc.com/Pages/default.aspx And there appears to be a wealth of information specifically also relating to moving to BC (even from outside of Canada) This might be helpful to you.

I did not read all of it, but I certainly did not see anything regarding discounts be subjected to your BC driver's license.

Good luck

thanks for that, I had a good look through and couldn't find what i'd been told either, guess if it is the case i can pay up front and then get the rebate.

You can either show your letter at the time when you purchase the autoinsurance or apply for the discount within 6 months.

I'll be moving to Vancouver in a few months too and also want to buy the car prior to arrival but still waving if I should rent for 1-2 weeks before purchasing. Please share your car buying experience later if possible.

will do, I'm not finding it easy actually. I've reached out to a load of dealerships and ask for the discounts and they keep telling me it depends on the sales person. Oh well keep trying

I'll post when i sort it out

I had a trip to Vancouver this Sept, test drove a few cars but find it very difficult to do anything without a permanent address. Even after I move, I feel reluctant to apply for the BC license before I can find a permanent place to live. I plan to stay at an AirBNB for a month while looking for a lease rental, and only when I keep my int'l DL that I can rent a car to run errands in the first month.

You can use your HK license rather than an international one if you want. What cars did you test drive out of interest?

Actually he would have to bring both because the international is just a translation of the HK license.

I used a HK driving license no issues at all to hire a car, the HK license is in English anyway so no problems. I don't have an international driving license.

the bigger issue is that looking at the ICBC website there is no reciprocal agreement between HK and Canada for driving licenses

That's right. I've asked ICBC and I was told I need to give up my license once I take the knowledge test (before the road test), which means there's a period that I can't drive by myself.

Do you have any car rental experience in Vancouver? When I need to rent for 2 weeks, I don't want to rent from the airport (charging extra fees) but not sure how to go about saving on rentals.

I test drove the Ford Escape, Toyota Rav4 and Subaru Forester.

When I went there a friend sorted out the rental through another friend so i got mates rates. not sure about the 'real' charge so can't help I'm afraid

cool, I'm looking at the Ford Explorer, Kia Sorrento, Nissan Pathfinder and the Toyota Highlander trying to get an idea of what deals I can get
